There’s a lot of things Clint wants to say to her: where the hell have you been and was it worth it? and for a while there, I thought I loved you, but he doesn’t because Natasha only ever says exactly what she means to say, and Clint doesn’t think that his discovery of her betrayal will make her anymore honest. So instead he lets her pick herself up, lets touch the tender skin of her cheek where the marks are just beginning to show, lets her look at him like she’s seeing him for the first time as Clint Barton the person and not as a tool, not a weapon to be used.
She presses on the forming bruise and says, “You showed Coulson my letter.”
And Clint tells her, “What can I say, I like a man in uniform.”
